In the introduction of the Belgian Civil Code there is an explanatory note: "The 36 laws that make the French Civil Code were united in one body by the law of March 21, 1804. On September 3, 1807, after the establishment of the Empire the civil Code was published again under the name of Code Napoleon, and various modifications were introduced in a number of its articles to adapt it to the new institutions. This text of the Napoleon Code is the one that came into effect in Belgium".
